Employment Legislation Update: Shared Parental Leave and Statutory Payments

This April will see increases in statutory payments for employees.

 

The National Minimum Wage is set to increase as follows:

For those workers receiving an increase, the new rates need to be paid from the first pay period commencing on or after the 1st April 2018.

 

*  The apprentice rate applies to apprentices under the age of 19 or those in their first year of apprenticeship if aged 19 or over.

 

Statutory Sick Pay

 

From the 6th April 2018, Statutory Sick Pay will increase from £89.35 to £92.05 per week.

 

This is payable for a period of 28 weeks in one period of incapacity for work.

 

In order to qualify for SSP, the employee’s average earnings must be at least the lower earnings limit which will increase from £113 to £116 from the 6th April 2018.

 

Family Leave

 

From April 2018, statutory payments for family leave (maternity*, adoption*, paternity & shared parental) will increase to £145.18 per week or 90% of employee’s weekly earnings if this is lower.  (The current rate is £140.98 or 90% of employee’s weekly earnings).

 

*The first six weeks of maternity and adoption pay are 90% of the employee’s average weekly earnings.

 

The increase in statutory payments is normally from the first Sunday in April which falls on the 1st this year.

 

Redundancy Pay

 

The maximum week’s pay for redundancy payments will increase from £489 to £508.
