Computer Modelling for Business Development

Workshop Section 1 - Presented by the Materials Processing Institute

Introduction to Process Modelling using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Optimisation of manufacturing processes is critical to the success of a production, especially where direct measurements are not possible. Optimisation can result in cost savings and less rejections / corrections.

This section of the workshop provides is an introductory level look at Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), which will take the audience through the process involved, terminology, the strengths and weaknesses of CFD, with a possible alternative highlighted. Example solutions will be presented to illustrate the process.

Workshop Section 2 - Presented by TWI

Predicting Distortion & Residual Stress in Welded Fabrications

An overview of modelling techniques that can be used to calculate welding-induced distortions from single pass butt welds up to ship panels containing 100's of welds.

Structural Integrity of Ageing Assets: Using Simulations for Life Extension

An overview of the types of simulations that can be used for the assessment of large steel fabrications with an eye to extending their safe operating life.

Numerical Modelling of Friction Stir Welding (FSW)

A review of the current state-of-the-art modelling techniques which are capable of optimising FSW process parameters and tool geometries, and predicting joint quality. Modelling techniques including the Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian approach and Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics are compared and ongoing FSW research is described.

Who should attend?

This workshop is particularly beneficial for engineers and personnel who are looking at ways of optimising processes using computational modelling as well as simulation and modelling techniques to support welding activities.
