Church Street - Have your say on planned improvements

Hartlepool Council has announced plans for a series of consultation events about the redevelopment of a key area of the town.

The Church Street Innovation & Skills Quarter is one of the priority areas identified by the Council to be transformed as part of the Hartlepool Regeneration Masterplan to spark regeneration, create jobs and ensure future prosperity.

The authority is set to receive almost £5.5m in Local Growth Funding from the Tees Valley Combined Authority to help deliver the ambitious Innovation and Skills Quarter project, which will include Church Street public realm improvements.

The ambitious plans to revitalise the area have already received a huge boost with the building of a new £11m Cleveland College of Art and Design which started earlier this year and the purchase of the Grade II listed former General Post Office in Whitby Street, which is planned to be converted into units for start-up businesses specialising in creative industries.

Residents and businesses are now being urged to attend one of the following drop-in consultation events where they will be able to comment on public realm improvements proposed for the Church Street area:

  • Wednesday 7 September – 3pm to 7pm – Hartlepool Art Gallery
  • Thursday 8 September – 2pm to 6pm –  Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, main atrium

Residents and businesses are also being invited to complete an online survey at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/HBC2016-Churchstreet-publicrealm

Councillor Kevin Cranney, chair of the Council’s Regeneration Services Committee, said: “The aim is to breathe new life into Church Street but retain and build upon the area’s heritage and historical past and I hope people will seize the opportunity to have their say at these consultation events."

He continued: “We are striving to create a vibrant environment where creative industries can thrive, providing new job opportunities for local people.”
